On a stringed instrument, the saddle provides one of the two contact points between the vibrating string and the instrument itself (the other contact point being the nut). It is the point of entry of the string's vibrations into the soundbox (for acoustic intruments). It is crucial for the saddle to be fitted, shaped and intonated properly for the instrument to produce the best volume at a perfect pitch. The saddle also plays a role in setting the string height (or "action") of your instrument.
